The ManyData platform is designed for storing, viewing, and sharing citizen science data. It allows anyone to create online data sets using environmental sensors, mobile devices, do-it-yourself science equipment, and other measurement tools. The platform is open source and uses Creative Commons licenses for the contributed data sets.
The talk will discuss the design of the platform and how it differs from alternatives such as Xively, Nimbits, ThingSpeak, and Ushahidi. The ManyData platform provides full support for both geospatial data and time series data, whereas the others focus primarily on one case or the other. We believe that the combination of time series sensor data and mapping is important for discovering and exploring complex patterns.
I will describe how to use the platform for various kinds of citizen science projects: monitoring air quality, recording wildlife observations, analyzing sensor data from a table-top ecosystem, and making measurements with DIY biology equipment. I will also show how to deploy your own clone of the system using a platform-as-a-service (e.g. OpenShift). You are never be locked into the system because you can freely transfer your data and copy our code.
Peter has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT. He is the founder of ManyLabs, a nonprofit focused on teaching math and science using sensors and simulations. Peter also founded Modular Science, a company working on hardware and software tools for science labs. He has given talks at Science Hack Day, Launch Edu, and multiple academic conferences, including SIGGRAPH.
