Docker is an Open Source engine to build, run, and manage Linux Containers. Containers use less resources than virtual machines, they boot faster, but they have similar guarantees of portability and repeatability for Linux applications. Those features made Docker and Linux Containers extremely popular for development and testing environments. But what does it take to use Docker and Containers for production workloads?

In this talk, we will present how to solve elegantly some complex deployment challenges, including:

  • Orchestration of Docker clusters with Docker-specific tools like Maestro-NG;
  • Orchestration of Docker clusters with generic schedulers like Apache Mesos;
  • Monitoring and performance metrics collection for containers;
  • High throughput scenarios where zero-overhead, bare-metal performance is expected;
  • Interaction with configuration management systems;
  • Service discovery with containers.

The audience doesn’t have to be familiar with Docker, but will certainly get more out of this talk if they have at least tried Linux Containers (through Docker or plain LXC) and have specific questions about production deployments.

Jerome is a senior engineer at Docker, where he rotates between Ops, Support and Evangelist duties. In another life he built and operated Xen clouds when EC2 was just the name of a plane, developed a GIS to deploy fiber interconnects through the French subway, managed commando deployments of large-scale video streaming systems in bandwidth-constrained environments such as conference centers, and various other feats of technical wizardry. When annoyed, he threatens to replace things with a very small shell script. His left hand cares for the dotCloud PAAS servers, while his right hand builds cool hacks around Docker.
