Most cloud users are well aware of the benefits of unlimited computing and storage offered by the cloud. However, as we become more dynamic in the way we provision our infrastructure we need networks that can be dynamically managed to accommodate ever-changing ephemeral infrastructure.

Software Defined Networking is essential to allow for complete cloud automation and agility and is rapidly evolving to become an invaluable tool for cloud operators.

In this talk we will discuss the challenges of virtual machine networking, present techniques developed in the last ten years and show how they led to the third leg of virtualization in the datacenter: network virtualization. We will discuss the OpenFlow protocol and how Open virtual Switch, and other software-defined network controllers are playing a critical part in software defined data center to deliver a transparent extension of the datacenter into the Cloud.

In particular we will discuss how project Daylight, project Floodlight and quantum bring together software defined networking and clouds.
