When I say everything counts, I mean everything – the work itself, the way we do it, and how we interact with one another. Looking back, I’m not surprised to see how much this affected my daily endeavors – but I remain struck by its ripple effects, and how much we were able to accomplish.
Beyond the product you’re building or the mission you’re trying to meet, if you don’t have the right people on your team – and a comfortable, open, team-adopted framework in which they can operate and communicate – you won’t enjoy the fullest possible measure of your success. And in the long run, you won’t keep the people you have.
It would be impossible to repeat the unique experience I had working on Obama’s second presidential campaign. I can’t bottle that lightning – but I hope to instill a flash of it into the work I see coming on the horizon. Because there are many more problems to solve, and a lot of important work left to do.
Let’s make it count.
