Most of our software development ideas and practices were developed in the 80’s and 90’s. Since then, computing has changed, and some of the assumptions that were valid when open source best practices were adopted are no longer true. Furthermore, a number of “best” practices from the proprietary software world were adopted without reconsideration. Today, we continue to follow “best” practices whose justifications are based on assumptions that are no longer true.
