By examining the a large working body of Java 8 code we demonstrate how much power is available in the upcoming Java release and showcase some examples of the sort of code you might be writing in two years time.

Examples will include lambda expressions and new library extension methods, method literals invokedynamic, method handles and type annotations.

Martijn Verburg is a Java/JEE and open source consultant who is passionate about software craftsmanship and the creative power of technical communities. He currently is the co-leader for the London JUG, runs two open source projects (PCGen and Ikasan EIP) and is a bartender at the Javaranch.

Most recently he’s been speaking at conferences (FOSDEM, DevNexus, TSSJS) and co-writing (With Ben Evans) “The Well-Grounded Java Developer” by Manning publications, which covers Java 7 and polyglot programming on the JVM.

Ben Evans has lived in “Interesting Times” in technology – he was the lead performance testing engineer for the Google IPO, worked on the initial UK trials of 3G networks with BT, built award-winning websites for some of Hollywood’s biggest hits of the 90s, rearchitected and reimagined technology helping some of the most vulnerable people in the UK and has worked on everything from some of the UKs very first ecommerce sites, through to multi-billion dollar currency trading systems.

He helps to run the London Java Community, and represents the JUG on the Java SE/EE Executive Committee. His first book “The Well-Grounded Java Developer” (with Martijn Verburg) has just been published.
