Social Commerce is a new e-commerce concept. facebook’s new Open Graph API’s (beta as of this writing, GA in mid-Jan) enable a whole new set of social commerce indicators. In lieu of the “Like” action on a URL, Open Graph enables users to associate any verb with any noun; such as JJ “wants” a “product”.
Merchants can add social indicators to their magento storefronts through the Social Commerce extension, a capability created by John Jawed and X.Commerce. Social indicators allow users to view what their social graph thinks of a product, brand, category, and merchant. Additionally, merchants benefit by having an automatic presence on facebook profiles without any additional marketing costs.
The open source Social Commerce extension is available on Magento Connect (http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/facebook-open-graph-2-0.html). There is an revolutionary version of the extension due in June; participants of the session can help shape the next version of the extension through feedback as well.
John Jawed is an open source contributor for PostgreSQL, PHP, and Gentoo Linux. John maintains the standard OAuth library for PHP, llds (Low Level Data Structure for Linux), libxrds, and magento’s Social Commerce extension.
John was involved in the rollout out of OpenID/OAuth at Yahoo!, and is the author behind the standard OAuth implementation for PHP. Currently John focuses on Linux Kernel research, authz/authn, product catalogs, and Social Commerce at X.Commerce.
