Inkscape is a cross platform, GPL, graphics editor. Its native file format, Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) is a W3C open standard.
This tutorial guides participants through a series of tasks designed to introduce Inkscape’s interface and tools, and build foundation skills for creating and modifying vector graphics.
Assumed knowledge: Free & Open Source Software licensing. Difference between raster and vector graphics.
New knowledge goals: Inkscape interface, creating shapes & lines, working with colour. Inkscape techniques, path operations, object manipulations. How to edit existing SVGs from wikimedia commons or openclipart.org
You don’t need to be a designer, artistic or know how to draw. Just install Inkscape on your laptop, bring a mouse, come along and learn how to get the best out of this brilliant tool.
As a speaker at OSCON I believe we should all strive to create a fun, educational, enjoyable and harassment-free conference experience for everyone.
I’m pleased to say Tim O’Reilly thinks so too!
If you are being harassed, or witness harassment please report it to venue security, the police, the conference organisers or a trusted friend. You do not have to put up with it.
For more detail on what a code of conduct which includes an anti-harassment policy should contain, please review the geekfeminism wiki conference anti-harassment policy template

I really enjoyed this session. Thank you again Donna!
Hi folks,
If you want to hit the ground running in this session, make sure you’ve got inkscape installed on your laptop and bring a mouse (or a graphics tablet if you have one!)
This will be very hands on, light on theory – so I want to share the theory online in advance. I know some people love it, and others just want to get into using and exploring, and only learn the theory as they feel they need it. Hope to cater to both types here.
Let me know what you want to learn? What do you want to achieve?
cheers Donna
