Web site optimization has historically been focused on server performance, and more recently on resource compression and caching. Some have even resorted to clever JavaScript packing manuevers, extreme image spriting and even micro-optimization of CSS selectors. Unfortunately nearly all of these performance improvements come at the cost of reducing development efficiency. Puling from practical experience implementing and deploying a variety of features for Wikipedia, Trevor and Roan have applied creative ideas to fundamental problems and came up with a set of techniques that have proven themselves to significantly improve performance.
Trevor Parscal has been working at the Wikimedia Foundation since 2008, focusing his engineering and design efforts on the front-end of MediaWiki. Key projects he’s worked on include redesigning the look and feel of Wikipedia and creating ResourceLoader which optimizes the way JavaScript, CSS and image resources are sent to the client.
Roan Kattouw has been a MediaWiki developer since 2006, and began working for the Wikimedia Foundation in 2009 as part of the Wikipedia Usability Initiative.

The best we have is a PDF of the slides (the real ones, not last Friday’s version), both with and without slides. See wikitech.wikimedia.org/view... . There are more links to other resources (much of the software that we use is open source and stand-alone, so you’re welcome to download and reuse it) in the conclusions section and on the second-to-last slide.
Great talk! Is there a written version available?
