Binary log API: A Library for Change Data Capture using MySQL

Mats Kindahl (Oracle), Lars Thalmann (Oracle)
Average rating: ****.
(4.00, 1 rating)

The ability to replicate from one MySQL server to another is a well established and proven technology. Until recently, replication from a MySQL server to an external application was not supported. This technology would not only enable a universe of applications, it would also permit developers to integrate near real time data changes from MySQL quickly and reliably into their own solutions.

The MySQL development team has created a binary log API (binlog API) to enable replication from MySQL to other systems. The binary log API can be used for Change Data Capture: reading and decoding the binary log to access and process the data as it is generated by the master. For example, the API can be used to seed a third party indexer or database for a full text search engine such as Lucene allowing for real time data aggregation of large data volumes.

The Binlog API is built in C++ and features:

Stand alone library

  • Easy to use
  • Extensible
  • Implemented in C++ using STL and Boost

In this session, the Binary log API will be presented along with examples of how to use it.

Dr. Lars Thalmann is the development director for MySQL replication, backup, and connectors. He is responsible for the strategy and development of these features and leads the corresponding engineering teams. Thalmann has worked with MySQL development since 2001, when he started as a MySQL Cluster developer. More recently, he has driven the creation and development of the MySQL backup feature, has guided the evolution of MySQL replication since 2004, and has been a key player in the development of MySQL Cluster replication. Thalmann holds a doctorate in Computer Science from Uppsala University, Sweden. He is one of the authors of the “MySQL High Availability” book.

I have uploaded the slides to the presentation page, so I hope that they will get there soon. If you do not see them in a day or so, please tell me and we will make sure that the slides are available elsewhere.

Is there any way to get your Oscon 2011 presentation slides?

Thank you
