Michael Downey
Community Manager, OpenMRS

Michael Downey’s professional experience in IT project and web infrastructure management spans over a decade in Fortune 500 IT departments, international development projects, and small start-ups.

He’s the community manager for OpenMRS, a medical record system designed for use in the developing world and other resource-poor contexts. At OpenMRS, he is responsible for both collaboration and productivity tools for the project’s community, as well as volunteer coordination and communication efforts. He is also the OpenMRS organization administrator for Google Summer of Code.

As a PhD student at Indiana University School of Informatics, his specialization in human-computer interaction research focuses on cross-cultural computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), cultural-historical activity theory, and usability of open source software. He has also conducted technology adoption research focused on developing countries and cultures (ICT4D).
