PostgreSQL Reloaded – Hot Standby, Streaming Replication & More!
Tuesday, July 20
8:30AM
E143/144
In this HANDS ON tutorial, you’ll learn how to design and deploy a wide range of backup and recovery techniques using PostgreSQL 9.0 Beta 3.
Although PostgreSQL 9.0 has not yet been released, the techniques covered in this tutorial leverage several cutting-edge features of PostgreSQL 9.0, so you’ll be learning techniques using the latest-and-greatest release of PostgreSQL!
As you can imagine, to design and test replication features with PostgreSQL you’ll need more than a single PostgreSQL instance – I’ll be using two CentOS virtual machines, and if you’d like to participate in the hands on portions of this tutorial, you should be sure to do the following:
- Download and install (using VMWare or VirtualBox) a linux virtual machine, and install PostgreSQL 9.0 beta 3 (or 2) on it. You can download RPM’s of PostgreSQL 9.0 beta 3 (or 2) from the URL below, and use the standard RPM installation method to install them (or you can install from source code):
http://www.postgresql.org/download/linux
If you prefer to use Windows, you can install two Windows virtual machines, but you’ll need to know how to automate the copying of files from one system to the other using Windows (not difficult, but this tutorial will be demonstrated on the Linux platform; though everything but shell scripts work about the same on Windows)
All that being said – don’t fret if you aren’t set for the hands-on portions of the tutorial – everything will be demonstrated during the lecture portion as well, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn more about designing and deploying highly available PostgreSQL Solutions.
