Prerequisites

A notebook computer with administrative access, 4GB of free disk space, and one of:

Option A
Come prepared with the following software installed:

1. Java 6 JVM (OpenJDK or Sun)
2. Python >= 2.5 and < 3.0
3. Python modules:
a. Thrift >= 0.2 (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/thrift)
b. Django >= 1.2 (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Django/1.2.1)
c. simplejson >= 2.1 (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/simplejson/2.1.1)
4. patch
5. ipython (optional)

See the CheeseShopTutorial for help on installing Python modules.

Platform specific notes:
Microsoft Windows: Hands-on Cassandra was prepared with Unix-like systems in mind. If you are planning to bring a computer with MS Windows and are not confident that you can translate the steps for your environment, then please consider Option B below instead.

Option B
Come prepared with the following software installed: VMware Player (Windows/Linux) or VMware Fusion (Mac), both of which are free (as in beer) from VMware’s website.

We’ll pass around USB keys with a 3GB virtual machine image that contains everything needed to follow along with the tutorial. If you choose this option, be sure you have Player/Fusion installed and tested ahead of time as there likely won’t be any time to deal with VMware setup/installation issues once the tutorial has begun.
