Free Geek – “where the needy get nerdy” – handles many of Portland’s recyclable computers, rebuilding some with Linux, responsibly recycling the materials in others. Freegeek runs on hundreds of volunteers, training and supporting many of Portland’s underserved, and providing them with tested and working systems. The Free Geek operating procedures are “open source” and community-driven, and have been replicated in other regions around the world.
The weather looks good for Friday. Let’s meet around 2:45pm at the Convention Center, and walk down to Free Geek at 1731 SE 10th, about 2.5 blocks south of Hawthorne. Or, you can take the number 70 bus from Multnomah north of the convention center, south on 12th (see trimet. The tour will start at 3:30pm – if you get there early, you can shop in the Free Geek store.
Afterwards, we can reconvene at the Lucky Labrador Brewpub on Hawthorne for food and beverage. Keith Lofstrom (Server Sky D136 11:50am) will guide the walk – Dave at Free Geek will be leading the tour.
