Forge.mil is the groundbreaking collaborative software development environment designed to improve the ability of the Department of Defense to rapidly deliver dependable software, services, and systems. In addition to SoftwareForge, a collaborative environment for the shared development of open source and DoD community source software, the DoD recently launched ProjectForge, a SaaS version of SoftwareForge designed to meet the application development needs of private-access projects.

In this session, the Forge.mil Community Manager will provide insight into the progress of Forge.mil, which has garnered over 4,000 members and 170 projects in the last year and a half. Learn from first-hand experience how open source principles are transforming the way the DoD develops software:

  • What is driving open source collaboration dynamics at the DoD?
  • Vision, goals, and objectives of Forge.mil and the 5 communities of interest
  • How did the DoD get started, what is the technology solution (ALM platform) they chose and why?
  • What challenges were faced in implementing the community, user adoption, culture change?
  • What lessons have been learned so far? What’s needs to happen next for broader success?
  • What are the specialized requirements for the DoD and government ‘inner source’ communities?
