In 2007, Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance announced the creation of Android, an open-source software platform for mobile devices. Since then, Android devices have been released all around the world on a variety of carriers.
This session, presented by Android Open-Source Lead Dan Morrill, will present an overview of the Android open-source project, including the reasons we launched the project, our goals, and our open-source philosophy. Dan will also discuss some of the gory details, describing the tools and processes we use, and where we plan to improve them.
Dan joined Google in 2006 to help developers using tools and platforms such as Android and the Google Web Toolkit. Dan is now the Open-Source and Compatibility Lead for the Android mobile platform. Before joining Google, Dan was a computer scientist at GE Research, where he gave himself headaches by switching between web development in JavaScript and integrated circuit design in Verilog. Dan lives in San Francisco with his wife, two cats, and a big pile of electronics.
