Software Control of Home Automation Systems
Last year I presented a talk on home automation at OSCON, focusing on the hardware aspects. This year my home automation talk will cover the software aspects of controlling home automation systems; topics include:
o Software control of electrical devices in the home, e.g. lights, motors, appliances, bells
o Detection of light conditions, e.g. dusk, dawn
o Detection of motion
o Collection of telephone caller-id information and its dissemination
o Using a wireless remote to activate computer programs
o Scheduling home automation tasks using cron
o Monitoring activity and taking secondary actions
o Writing scripts to simplify home automation tasks
Practical applications include turning off all the lights at night, summoning everyone for mealtime, and broadcasting caller-id information to all computers. The talk will cover the use of the ‘heyu’ open source home automation program. Examples will include the creation of ‘bash’-based stand-alone scripts, background daemons, and cron additions.
