Measuring the Health of Open Source Ecosystems
The Eclipse Foundation carefully tracks growth in membership, project downloads and web traffic, among other things. However, we are very careful to note growth in these statistics as a symptom of our health, not a measure of it.
In their 2004 HBR Article “Strategy as an Ecology”, Iansiti and Levin describe three factors for measuring the health of an ecosystem—Productivity, Robustness and Niche Creation. This session will overview the health of the Eclipse Ecosystem based on these three criteria, and offer some insights on how to operationalize measuring the health of your own ecosystems.

Donald Smith, MBA, MSc, is Director of Ecosystem Development for the Eclipse Foundation, an independent not-for-profit foundation supporting the Eclipse open source community. Prior to joining Eclipse, Donald was Director of Technology Evangelism at Oracle and has also worked for startups WebGain and The Object People.
