As Ubuntu environments grow, the complexity of managing packages and updating systems quickly outgrows the ability of a sys admin to easily manage servers and desktops with manual commands and scripts. System management tools strive to automate many of these tasks but few are designed to use technologies that are optimized for managing Ubuntu environments. The technologies developed for Landscape give Sys Admins the flexibility to use both scripting and automation to optimally manage their Ubuntu environments in a client-server architecture. An open source client installed on each system initiates a systematic pinging routine that allows the clients to update against arbitrary package repositories in near real time. This talk will explore some of the technologies that Ubuntu admins can use to manage their Ubuntu environments and how these can be extended to managing Cloud environments.
