Persistence Solutions with the Smalltalk Seaside Web Framework

This short talk will survey the various persistence solutions for Smalltalk programs, particularly as used by Seaside web applications, including:

  • Simplistic image-saving solutions
  • Simple file-out of objects
  • Object-server-based scalable frameworks (such as GOODS and Magma)
  • Object-relational Mapping (GLORP and Cincom’s ActiveRecord implementation)
  • Object databases (GemStone/S)

Each technology will be described with advantages and disadvantages, license issues, and current level of support, including compatibility with the various Smalltalk implementations, such as Squeak, VisualWorks, GNU Smalltalk, and GemStone/S.
