Steve’s first book, High Performance Web Sites, contained best practices focused primarily on Web 1.0 sites: reduce the number of HTTP requests, gzip content, and set a far future Expires header to name a few.
Steve’s second book, Even Faster Websites, contains advanced techniques important for Web 2.0 sites to be fast. In this session, Steve expands on several of these new best practices including how to load external scripts without blocking the rest of the page, the inefficiencies of CSS selectors, and the benefits of downloading resources across multiple domains in spite of increased DNS lookups.

Steve Souders
Steve Souders works at Google on web performance and open source initiatives. His book High Performance Web Sites explains his best practices for performance along with the research and real-world results behind them. Steve is the creator of YSlow, Cuzillion, and Hammerhead. He is co-chair of Velocity and co-founder of the Firebug Working Group. He taught CS193H High Performance Web Sites at Stanford, and frequently speaks at conferences including OSCON, The Ajax Experience, SXSW, and Web 2.0 Expo.

Good information, and lots of it. Steve probably covered more than he should have in the limited time given. Example page load waterfall diagrams were especially useful.
