Best Practices for Sysadmins and Database Admins

BoF
Location: D138

Managing systems is difficult, but there are sanity-saving tools that can help out. From basic “install monitoring” to the more advanced “soft” topics such as dealing with unreasonable expectations, Sheeri K. Cabral will share her expertise as a sysadmin and DBA.

Sheeri will start off the BoF listing off some of the areas that have helped her out, and which tools she’s used to help make the technical, logistical and person-to-person issues run smoothly. After that, we can all talk about the ways our environment runs smoothly, and relative merits.

For instance, some folks have daily e-mails sent to them with general information, and others only have mail sent when there’s a problem. Intermediate/experienced admins can discuss the pros and cons of both ways, and new folks will get a sense of the issues involved.
