This workshop is an introduction to developing location aware Web 2.0 applications on an open source geospatial platform. The workshop, which will include both business and hands-on technical aspects of developing web mapping applications, will cover the business benefits of open source web mapping applications, installing an open source web mapping platform and tools, working with multiple geospatial data sources, and developing web-based edit applications.
Attendees will be see how to create dynamic web-based mapping applications including spatial edit, and will understand the key business drivers motivating commercial web mapping applications and how to use open source tools to connect to, prepare, and stylize geospatial information; to use an open source API to connect to multiple data sources including Oracle Locator/Spatial; and to develop open source web mapping applications.
Neal is an experienced web mapping application developer and has delivered labs on web mapping in the US and Europe. Neal was awarded his masters degree in GIS in 2007.
Dave McIlhagga is one of the pioneers in building a successful business based on developing open source web mapping applications. Starting in 1999 as a sole proprietor, DM Solutions now numbers 18 people. DM Solutions’ business model is completely based on open source software.
Geoff is a technology evangelist at Autodesk. His particular interests include streamlining the infrastructure management workflow at utilities, telecommunications firms and local government, open source geospatial and Web 2.0 and its impact on infrastructure management, and the convergence of architectural, engineering, geospatial, and 3D simulation and its implications for egovernment including citizen involvement, urban planning, emergency planning and first response. Geoff came to Autodesk from MCI VISION* Solutions where he was Director of Product Development. VISION* Solutions is credited with pioneering RDBMS-based spatial data management, CAD/GIS integration, and UML modeling in the utility, communications, and public works industries. He has more than 10 years experience developing enterprise geospatial solutions for the utilities, communications, and public works industries. Geoff is a frequent speaker at geospatial events around the world including OSCON, GITA (US, Australia, Japan), GeoBrazil, GeoTec, Location Intelligence, MapIndia, GIS in the Rockies, World Map Forum, Map Middle East, and MapAsia and recently received two Speaker Excellence Awards at GITA 2007.
