Laika is a free open source project that is being jointly developed by Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology and MITRE. Laika analyzes and reports on the interoperability capabilities of EHR systems.

To support EHR data interoperability testing, Laika is designed to verify the input and output of EHR data against the standards and criteria identified by CCHIT. Laika will be used by the Certification Commission to perform part of the interoperability certification inspection of EHRs in 2008.

This talk will cover:

  • The origin of Laika
  • Overview of the XML-based standards being used in EHR interoperability (CDA/CCD/C32)
  • Laika’s approach to XML inspection
  • XML structure validation using a combination of XML Schema and Schematron
    • Deep inspection of clinical information formatted in XML using XPath and Ruby
    • Using UMLS to verify clinical data
  • Laika’s impact on Health IT
