An Open Source Startup in Three Hours

Gavin Doughtie (Google), Andrew Hyde (TechStars)
People, Programming, Tutorial, Web Applications
Location: Portland 255
Average rating: ****.
(4.25, 16 ratings)

One of the most enjoyable developments in the last year has been the “Startup Weekend” experience, where a group of strangers gathers on Friday evening and launches a web company 54 hours later on Sunday night.

This tutorial walks participants through each step of the startup weekend experience, starting with idea formation and ending with how to transition from “weekend project” to “going concern”. For OSCON, we’ll also be doing interactive exercises in idea selection and technology planning.

Topics covered:

  • Why compress the time so much?
  • Pre-weekend prep: Space, sponsors, signups and idea collection
  • Picking an idea (exercise)
  • The usability sprint
  • Business formation
  • Thinking about technology when every minute literally counts. (exercise)
  • Professional polish in design and marketing
  • Working with total strangers
